might not be one of those heterosexuals we hear so much about. Not only that, but he might be softening on the backstop....

A 5 year backstop? Not a chance. It's another remain scenario. Tell her to get a proper job.

The view that LV might be "softening" on the backstop would only be valid if you ignore the article saying

Ms Creighton is now a political affairs consultant as chief executive of Vulcan Consulting and is no longer a member of Fine Gael....

Ms Creighton said she is expressing a personal opinion and not reflecting anyone else's view....

When asked if she had discussed Brexit with Mr Varadkar, she replied: "Not recently."...
A more accurate headline would be "friend of LV, speaking in a personal capacity, thinks a time limited backstop might be better than no deal but doesn't think the UK would go fot it"

(The last bit, given the ERG line is now "no backstop at all" is pretty much on the money)

An even more accurate headline would be "Leo does not have a lot of room to manoeuvre so is using Ms Creighton to test the water."

As Barry said, a 5 year backstop won't work with the British, but Varadkar had to make sure.

    What's LVs supposed game then?

The assumption is he is so scared of No deal that he'd rather have a transition with no backstop. But that (at most) kicks the can down the road a little over 12 months. The hard border would still appear as soon as the transition period ends.

On the other hand if he sticks to his guns and we still get no deal (resulting in a hard border) it will be almost a given that a backstop is the first demand in any future negotiations. Sure there may be some pain from a hard border until then, but then the long term is better.

So why would he be weakening on the backstop?

Or is it just the UK that is prepared for short term pain for long term gain?....
