There is a sceen in the movie Waterloo, where the French are on one side of the battlefield and the allies on the other. The French bands are playing and their soldiers are cheering and Napoleon is riding up and down on a white horse. And on the other side is Wellington who turns to his staff and says mildly, "excitable fellows the French."

Believe it or not, I am not overly xenophobic, but what with Tusk and now verhofstadt, that scene keeps popping into my head.

To paraphase one of our last great political leaders Winston Spencer Churchill "Never in the field of British politics and Brexit was so much expected by so many of so few......only to be bitterly disappointed"
