Export Success
I normally keep this blog to local issues, but as some residents may remember, I also serve in the unpaid role as the Prime Minister's Trade Envoy to Canada. There is a huge amount of Canadian investment in our area, including in our ports.
Forgive me a little bit of gloating and joy as this week the Canadian Government signed a $60 billion dollar contract for their next generation of frigates. They wisely chose the BAE Systems British design of the Type 26. This is a campaign I supported in my role as Trade Envoy to Canada undertaking a number of trips to support the work the UK High Commission in Canada did supporting this process. Great news for the UK and although the the ships for the Canadian Royal Navy will be built in Canada, there are benefits back to the UK economy.
Moreover, with Australia also choosing this design for their next generation of frigates we will have the Royal Navy (our ships are already being built on the Clyde), the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Australian Navy operating on the shame ship. This means we have huge capability for interoperability between our forces but also an opportunity to collaborate during the construction phase to ensure industrial and economic benefits to all three countries.
Well done to our team at MoD and in the UK High Commission who led this campaign.
See, it's not all doom and gloom!
Argh, typo in the title, please make it good mods.
