Franco Italian war of words, still all is well in the EU.....isn't it?

Oh dear and what place in hell would Tusk like to put the Italians?still we are leaving and those remainers from here and the rest of the eu tell us what a mess we will be in and how we've been a pain with our opt outs like schengen which is sacrosanct isn't it?

But to "reset" relations he said France had to address "fundamental" issues. He called on Paris to hand over left-wing militants wanted by Italy and to stop returning migrants. He also complained of lengthy French border checks causing traffic jams at the frontier.

You do have to have sympathy with the Southern states over Merkel's unilateral decision. I went to Italy a couple of summers back (flew into Pisa and hung out mainly around Lucca) and the number of migrants was a surprise. Not so many in Florence, but I suspect a heavy handed police said that that was strictly off limits.

Recalling your ambassador is pretty serious in the world of diplomacy. Just imagine if the two countries went to war, a phoney war would last decades!

Italy is bankrupt and in diplomatic confrontation with France; Spain faces a serious attempt to split up the country and will never be able to repay its national debt, nor will Portugal, Greece, Cyprus while France is in a state of open civil rioting and rebellion with a national debt which now exceeds its GDP and, in common with Germany, is on the brink of recession. The spread and growth of anti-EU predominantly right wing populists politics will ensure other nations vote to leave the failing circus, provided democracy is permitted to remain the system of government. There is no taking this for granted, one has only to look at the massive efforts by the UK Establishment to undermine the democratic will of the British people to realise that there is a real risk, however slight, that democracy might well be compromised in the future.

With all this happening why are we bothered by Brexit; the EU shows the early signs of its own implosion. Perhaps we should be making overtures to the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Austria and Finland to join us in creating a trading bloc in Europe. We could call it perhaps The Common Market or the European Trading Community. Once nations like France have sorted out their economies they could even be invited to join; on our terms of course!

I’d supposed Maggie Thatcher was the last one to wade in with her handbag in Europe — looks like the serene front is fracturing...

France thinks we Italians are like a western african tribe, easy to subdue and enslave in exchange for food and alcohol.

Well, they are wrong. The days of submission before the toyboy of Paris, the guy who married his grandmother, are over.

I guess Macron is less popular in Italy than he is in France.

Doesn't this stem back to the French "invading" Italy with a few cops going into a migrant camp in Bardonecchia? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-43606225

And then there are things like this.....

This Franco Italian "spat" amuses me. It is virtually impossible to stop illegal immigration through the French/Italian border. A lot of it is mountainous with no way to use a vehicle to get across it. Basically other than for a few very hardy hikers, abandoned shepherds huts a few "refuges," wild goats and deer it is empty.
