Franco will not "Rest in Peace"

If this gets through the Spanish parliament, they are going to open the tomb, remove the remains and ask his family to take charge of them.
If they don't the government will find a different place to bury them.

Should he be left to rest in peace, or is 40 years long enough for an evil dictator to be given space in a basilica in the "Valley of the Fallen".

I would say leave them be . Rightly or wrongly the original decision to inter Franco there is part of Spains history and nothing they do will change that . It may though open up old divisions , let sleeping dogs lie .

That's it really. What difference does it make where his bones are interred? I think this is more about the fact that those dry bones are in a prestigious place, over which the new PSOE (socialist) government now want to exert their authority. They couldn't do it whilst he was alive, so they'll have a go now he's dead.
Spain had a policy of don't talk about the war, to try to stop it all boiling up again at the end of hostilities. As you say, this could put the pot back on the stove.

Margaret Thatcher's ashes were scattered at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea. JoG, you can go and try to scoop them up and put them in a dumpster somewhere if it makes you feel happy.
She didn't cause the deaths of more than 500,000 people in a civil war though, did she, so hardly comparable.

I tend to measure politicians in terms of the damage done to me and this country in not terribly interested in anywhere else.

But to addres your issue properly

This is just leftard hatred being given voice. Another ratchet click on from the last failed attempt to destroy his monument to those killed on his side ...

Have we evicted Karl Marx from Highgate on the grounds he has no right to be anywhere near a religious burial ground given his clear hatred of sky fairy cults ...

That's what this is really about

it's Sean Connerys line to Nicholas cage in "the rock" after one of the corpses near him 'moves'

'yeah that happens sometimes. what do you want me to do about it ? kill him AGAIN?"

Seems to me the left leaning of the gruniad certainly do ...

I sincerely hope that old wounds are not opened by this. since the Catalonia bid for separation, I have noticed far more national flags in Andalucian cities, Seville especially.
Nationalist sentiment seems to be on the increase, this may fuel its rise further.
