El País publishes an article suggesting that all the recent inconvenient voting, including Cataluña and Brexit is down to the Russians.

I'm not quite sure how they came to this conclusion.

Thankfully, although security agencies have suspected Russia of giving support to separatist movements for some time, a side effect of the various investigations into their meddling in the U.S Election has been that evidence is beginning to emerge.

It's obviously in Mr Putin's interest to see a weaker, disunited EU, NATO, etc.

A couple of weeks ago, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow presented a fascinating report on this very subject (worth watching).

This is a pretty good rundown of what may be going on, too:

The Catalan political prisoners are probably incarcerated to prevent them standing for election.( I assume those facing charges may not stand for election) their replacements may be more virulent in their demands which may alienate moderate Catalan voters, thus Rajoy wins. If there is a violent campaign then Rajoy wins as he can justify police brutality from the GC.
Whatever happens, Catalonia will be damaged and its people subjugated.

If the reports are to be believed the non-violent political prisoners were handcuffed behind their backs, two were stripped naked, and they loudly played the Spanish national anthem in the police van on the way to prison. Sounds like a fascist state to me.

Alex Salmond interviews Carlos Piegdemont https://youtu.be/Wd4x_7ctOlI (from 13:30). Puigdemont gets his say on the Catalan issue. Well done Alex in giving us the chance to hear this man's side of the story.
