    What is Liberalism?

We keep referring to it, but what do we understand by it, and just what is a Liberal Elite? I don't see how current politics is Liberal. Am I missing something?

Liberalism for me is people /government that believe they are doing what is best for us because they say so . The liberal elite are doing what is best for themselves while telling us they are doing it because it is the best for us .

Depends where you're coming from. "Liberal" is code for communist or ultra Left among the Far Right and reactionary blue collar labour. Liberal politics for me means unprincipled hypocrisy, while liberal (small "l") I see as free and unfettered by unreasonable rules and restrictions...

Like many political terms, its meaning is slippery. Britain is now following the US in using it as a fairly close synonym of left-wing, and that's approximately who your 'liberal elite' are. It was previously characterised by a belief in free markets, and other European languages have kept their equivalent words to this previous, more right-wing sense.

English now uses 'libertarian' to cover some of the ground that 'liberal' used to cover, though 'libertarian' may be closer to the jungle capitalism that we associate with the United States, rather than the more responsible position of the Whigs.

Think you are confusing liberalism and socialism
Liberalism to me meant the freedom in the early 50s when we lost the restrictive Atlee government and Churchill returned to throw the shackles off, rationing in particular. Then along came the 60s, and that was real liberalism

To me liberalism is the pursuit of personal freedom.
The primacy of the individual over the group.

The antithesis of socialism in many ways.

The will to respect each others right to be uninvolved. To do as they please. And to have your same rights respected the same way by others.
A minimum of laws if you will. Less is more.

Liberal Democrats have confused the name somewhat. It is now more likely to be used to refer to them than it is the enemies of Fascism for example.
But even they hold some liberal outlooks. Campaign for greater freedoms on personal data and so on. Vote against anti terrorism laws and so on.

For me libertarianism while very close to my own ideals of property rights, is basically still just American code for... "I'm a Republican who is ashamed to admit I voted for George Bush".

...and that seems to be the problem. It seems to mean slightly different things to different people when actually it a the name for nothing. Haven't I heard Corbyn, Cameron, Blair, even Junker described as the Liberal Elite? How can that be?
