BNP members to be barred from teaching

Headteachers are to be given the power to dismiss teachers who are members of the BNP or other groups which have an "extremist tenor".
The pledge by the education secretary, Michael Gove, follows the case of a BNP activist who used a school laptop to post comments describing some immigrants as "filth". Gove said he would allow school heads and governing bodies to sack teachers for membership of the far-right party. Members of the BNP are barred from working as police or prison officers.
The minister told the Guardian: "I don't believe that membership of the BNP is compatible with being a teacher. One of the things I plan to do is to allow headteachers and governing bodies the powers and confidence to be able to dismiss teachers engaging in extremist activity...

Oh the political witch hunt continues....I wonder if Mr Gove will be banning these groups from other public bodies.....

A secret high-level Metropolitan police report has concluded that Muslim officers are more likely to become corrupt than white officers because of their cultural and family backgrounds.
The document, which has been seen by the Guardian, has caused outrage among ethnic minorities within the force, who have labelled it racist and proof that there is a gulf in understanding between the police force and the wider Muslim community. The document was written as an attempt to investigate why complaints of misconduct and corruption against Asian officers are 10 times higher than against their white colleagues....

I doubt this move would even be legal under the human rights act where you cannot discriminate against someones political beliefs. Its a just another sad day for democracy in the UK.

I have to agree with that. As long as a teacher doesn't try to promote their beliefs in the classroom, and the party they support is quite legal, which the BNP is of course, the question shouldn't even arise.

Good. It has nothing to do with democracy. Our education authorities have the right to decide who is fit to teach our children. Nic, you're a hypocrite. If an Islamic cleric was teaching in our schools wearing a Burkah you'd be jumping up and down spitting you racism and calling for them to be thrown out.
Keep extremists out of our schools, political and religious.

It seems there is a double standard here. I think that this is smelling a bit of off the cuff politics from the government, i think the most prudent way would be to go down the route that is currently used for teachers, a complaint or assessment made and the existing disciplinary route used, that way we get a fair trial for the person involved, many clerics do not preach hate just as many BNP members keep their beliefs private, i don't like the idea of a teacher with very pro labour views pushing that in schools which many do and have done for years, i think that any pushing of political beliefs should a disciplinary matter that is taken more seriously
Just because i'm paranoid, doesn't mean their not after me!!!

So if you think politics should be taken out of the classroom, what about faith-schools? They push their agendas, should all faith schools be shut down and only secular schools allowed?

Faith schools are different. If I send my child to a catholic school, I expect the school to teach my child about Catholicism in a very positive light. If I send my child to a state school, I don't want the teachers politics to indoctrinate my child or to effect his/her education.

I would object to any teacher of any faith or ethnicity teaching my child whilst having their face covered be it a Burka or Balaclava.

Yes. Children should be taught religion as a History subject, and it should be made clear that all religions are based on myth, superstition etc.

I dunno, perhaps they ignore the death caused by religion and just focus on what God does for them in his almighty glory.
