    Iraq's secret war files.

The most damning evidence yet of the USA's shameful and criminal role in Iraq.

    Re: Iraq's secret war files.

Interesting statement by James Clad, who in 2007 was apointed deputy assistant secretary of defence in the Bush administration

From the interview with James Clad

PAUL Very good. Now, let me ask me you put on your Pentagon hat. For a moment if you could put your Pentagon hat on again. What will be the reaction round at the Pentagon&

    JAMES Oh dear. (CHUCKLES)

PAUL Yeah. What'll be reaction round at the Pentagon to Wikileaks and the revelation that, what, 15,000 more Iraqis at roadblocks and so forth than we knew about?

JAMES What to say? Well, of course, the easiest thing to say would be I left the Pentagon last year. Another easy thing to say would be that I was the most senior American defence official, but for Asia -which included New Zealand, by the way, which was an interesting irony and turnaround - but it didn't include the Middle East. But that said, I think that, I mean, personally, the decision to stay after the invasion was a terrible mistake, and I think the last decade, if we look back, has seen a terrible overextension of American power and land wars that no one really understood at the time, other than the punitive war against the Taliban regime. But even that was pissed away, to be honest with you, because of a decision to stay on and try to nation-build, so I'm very down on the whole of the last 10 years, and I think that Wikipedia leaks& And I don't know how much of it's, you know, solidly based on stuff that truly was prepared at the time or not, but I do know that it was a stupid occupation to get into for any length of time. I still think it's a 50/50 decision about whether Saddam Hussein should have been thrown out by an invasion. It was pretty clear that the French and the Russians were going to basically acquiesce in the ending of the sanctions and an ability by the Iraqi regime way back the to restock with chemical bio-weapons. I happen to firmly believe that. So an invasion - right, OK. But to stay on in the way we did was a terrible error, and I'm just glad I wasn't working that patch of the world.

Dave, and anyone else who posts links to long videos, a general point.

Not many people can be bothered to sit through anything that's more than a few minutes long without having at least a decent written summary of what it's about. If you want to have a serious discussion about a topic, just the video link isn't enough - if you look back through the posts in this forum you'll see that the vast majority of those with nothing more than a video link either haven't been commented on at all or have received a small handful of general comments; very few provoke a decent discussion.

A couple of paragraphs summarising the the main points of content would go a long way to stimulating debate.

Just to sum up my position

    Wikileaks = political, manipulative *******s
The leak of confidential military documents = disgraceful.

Naturally I, like many others, believes in more transparent government. However, in all cases that just isn't plausible, especially countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. Due to our huge military involvement in the worlds affairs, there will be information that just shouldn't be reported straight away, and other information that should only be published after many decades; which is currently the case.

But that aside, people must realise that Wikileaks is quite political in what it does.

I have a strong distaste for Julian Assange. He strikes me as an extremely deceitful person, not actually interested in transparency or the casualties, simply point scoring against the conservative right by any means necessary.

    Fair enough.
This documentry details the US militaries complicity in torture of detainees, after the Abu Grabe scandal was made known. The deliberate killing of civilians. The killing of insurgents wishing to surrender. The manipulation of the media and the falsifying of the true death toll. The lies told about Iraq's connections with Al Qaeda. The truth about what kind of country that has been left behind. It's arguably worse than it was under Saddam. The government is not democratically elected. Torture, murder and opression of any descenters is at least as bad as it was under Saddam. Government corruption is rife. Violence, terror and murder are now daily part of life in Iraq.

Great, so in the meantime, until our respective governments deem whether or not we should know about such things, we're just to swallow the BS fed to us by the likes of Blair, Straw, Bush, Rumsfeld, Powel, Rice and the rest of the shower of sh**??

For files of a confidential nature to be leaked requires a huge lapse in sense. They put operations at risk, they put individuals at risk, and in this case, operating soldiers. Its a disgrace.

    So is what they reveal.
Iraq is now largely in the control of the Iraqi police and military, or not as the case may be.
The vast majority of coalition troops have now left Iraq.
