The Benefits Of New Home Guard.

To ensure greater safety for decent people, esp in the more dangerous parts of inner cities, which have been turned into dangerous ghetto's of vice and violence, I would rebrand an old concept - the Home Guard.

Of course, this is 2010, therefore, the duties and rewards would be quite different to that of the original Home Guard.

First of all, it would be an organisation to be proud of, therefore, no thugs, or those with an obvious agenda that is dubious..

The very best people possible, trained to standards of excellence.

Communcation skills, self defence, fitness, all of that would be part of a muti faceted training programme.

I would envisage using around 50,000, in the next three years, rising to another 50,000, in the ensuing two years.

    Nationwide.

These new jobs would mean quite a lot to many people, and I am sure that many would put themselves forward.

Among their duties would be to patrol the streets of the most affected areas, and ensure the safe passage of innocent people, working with the police to smash human and drug trafficking rings, and being mindful of the new threat of domestic terrorism.

This would not be simply creating Macjobs for the unemployed to go into.

On the contrary, this would be a very beneficial (to society?), position, which has a proper purpose, and sense of value.

I must stress, before anyone wishes to make a link, I speak not of a Gestapo here, but simply a method of creating employment while, at the same time, increasing the safety of people.

    Over to you....

Re: The Benefits Of New Home Guard.

Now this is something which I feel would be far more valuable to the safety and security of the UK than the thousands of troops sent to places like Iraq and Afghanistan, and the billions of pounds worth of military hardware which is currently floating, flying and driving around the world.

If we had a national security force which was part police, part border security and part armed forces whose sole job it was to protect the security of the UK in every form, whether it be from intelligence gathering to foreign fishing boats sneaking into our waters to catching smugglers to rounding up and deporting Islamic militant fundamentalists to being on hand at any potentially contentious marches or rallies, I'm sure that the vast majority of us would be well satisfied the defence allocation from our taxes was being well spent.

I'm not talking about anything particularly overt, but a low key and very high tech security force which worked on a day to day basis with the other organisations already responsible for many aspects of policing, safety and security; an organisation which was trained and prepared to instant readiness to cope with any threat to the law, order and security of the country. This could be complimented by a very much reduced international military capability, whose role would be nothing other than going to those parts of the word where there was trouble or conflict which directly affected the security of the UK and its remaining colonies and nothing else.

Not only would we save billions but we'd be making this country a safer place to live in too.

Then why do those who could make this happen not make it so?

Sadly those that could make it happen will not as it would be political suicide for them, their own parties, the opposition, press, civil liberties groups and those with something to hide would rip them to shreds for attempting it.

I say but Prince Charles in charge for a bit we could do with a good dictatorship for while!

Interesting post, is there any prospect of this happening?

My own view is that it's highly unlikely for the simple reason that the current way of doing things is far too entrenched into the political system as a whole, and anything which involves thinking outside the box, let alone trying to implement anything which is radical, is doomed to failure before it even gets to the serious discussion stage.

I don't believe it'll be before we have a system which is able to make genuinely long term decisions which are for the genuine benefit of the country as a whole, something which itself can only come about through true proportional representation and the de-politicising of much of government, that this country will get to anything near a point where it could be in economic and social terms.

    Probably not.

The Tories are muttering darkly though, about a radical revamp of the police (in England & Wales).

Quite what it involves, I do not know.

Hopefully it will involve getting more bobbies on the streets.

What we need is a cross between the the FBI and Departement of Home land Security.

Why do you think an FBI-esque model would be a good thing?
