Citing senior government officials, the newspaper said the Treasury is working on plans to "reprofile" spending cuts, to spread the pain of deficit reduction more evenly over the next few years. However, the FT added that a decision on delaying cuts has not yet been taken.
The Conservatives, who say public spending must be slashed fast to avert a debt crisis and a jump in interest rates, have tried to use their annual conference this week to make a clear and consistent case for drastic cuts to public spending.
A Treasury spokeswoman said it does not comment on speculation, adding that details of the cuts will be announced at a major spending review to be published on October 20.
