Are Sexist Magazines like ESQUIRE Posing an Offence on Newsagent Shelves?

ESQUIRE. NuTs. Zoo. And much, much more!
Magazines like these are seen on shelves everywhere all the time. They promote masculinity, heterosexuality, the adonis image of the young gentleman, how to step out in style, how to negotiate the labyrinth of dating and relationships, how to perform the correct moves in the art of copulation to please your "friend", how to hone to its optimum the body beautiful with a view to eventually bagging the correct girl...and how to be nauseatingly, chauvinistically, domineeringly, self-seekingly, arrogantly sexist. Whether with or without "the other half", you are when at first invited to enter in to the male-gang mentality of these "lads' mags" under the impression that they hold the secrets to something in your lifestyle and personality that is lacking; that the writers of these mags are the success-stories of society, the mentors who will nourish and nuzzle you under their pinstripe Armani suitflaps until you are like them, the teachers of babes that have not yet reached the maturity of pubescent macho staus that they themselves were evidently born to. But they teach you along the rhythm of these testosterone-fuelled currents of energy to be that worst nightmare, that arch-villain, that nemesis of all women's longings known as MCP.
That is basically what these people present to their readers, and in doing so they are attempting to make an art and a way of life out of being the most sexist breed of homo sapiens on the planet.
You only have to leaf through that abomination of the imagination known as ESQUIRE magazine to see for yourselves what I mean. It is a venus flytrap of the tackiest filth available on the market, a hive of abusive attitudes and postures that even Conan the Destroyer would wince to look at.
Let us get one thing straight: these people are not James Bond 007, they are cavemen! Their magazines are the epitome of everything a woman does not want said about her, and they are advocating dangerous acts towards her when they tell you-the unassuming reader-that these things are normal. Normal! What planet are they on? Mars?

I hope I am not making this thread a liability when it comes to exercising a solid and substantial opinion on those cowboys who write such dripping excess and tasteless dross, but then that is why these magazines hold surveys occasionally, isn't it? For you to express your point of view. Are they not making themselves in danger of an injunction for the outrageous acts of sexual depravity they advocate against women in the sexist way they write? Tit-for-tat, as they say.

You don't say! The Google Adsense Spider has even generated an advert above this very thread already for that despicable mag. Don't get bought. They are probably just waferthin geeks with an agenda. You know, like the Wizard of Oz? No one is like what sort of man that mag depicts in real life...are they?

Interesting, I am educated by your post; but you started that process, or is that something is mis-set in my computers?

No actually, you get these little programs everywhere. They are known as Spiders or Bots and they gather data from posts like yours or mine in which certain keywords are mentioned, and then they go and get the adverts that those companies are using and place them above these posts as references to it. I think the software is used by the companies as an agent, or Google offers its service, to find relevant webpages where there ad might be best placed in what they think is context. It actually works in some ways as well. It is about the correlation of interest with the subject of that page's text that they believe-or stats show-will attract prospective consumers. You can actually control the Ad Spiders in this way. If you want an advert placed above say for a book you've written, or one you like that you feel others should be encouraged to purchase, all you have to do is mention it in your post and then that theme shall govern the type of adverts the Adsense Spider will go and collect from companies using its software and place them here.

If you look in the Online Users (what users are doing now) list, you will find out what I mean. They might not be there all the time but they do often come onto the site to gather data for the abovementioned advertisements they want to place and also data for their own survey figures and stats. It is a minor form of virtual monitoring of trends in peoples' thinking and preferences. The online userlist can be found by going to the Forum Index page and near the very bottom clicking on 'guest users' link where it tells you who is online and how many guests there are.

Re: Are Sexist Magazines like ESQUIRE Posing an Offence on Newsagent Shelves?

Apart from the fact that I have good ad-blocking software on my computer meaning I don't get many, the content of what ones I do see doesn't bother me in the slightest, regardless of what they're trying to promote or how innocent or explicit they might be. If I have a vague interest I might occasionally click on an advertising link to see what it is, if I don't, I won't, as simple as that.

Where I see explicit magazines on newsagent's shelves I might sometimes glance along the covers and think "hmm, she's nice" (or not as the case may be!) but I can't recall ever having been tempted to buy one. As long as there's some control over their availability to minors I don't have a problem with them - although so many magazines, especially those targeted at the teen market, are so full of rubbish I can't see why anyone would bother with them in the first place!

Re: Are Sexist Magazines like ESQUIRE Posing an Offence on Newsagent Shelves?

I am on a subscription to ESQUIRE, having replied to a mail offer I was sent-probably in conjunction with other offers related to something I may have actually already purchased or been subscribing to at the time. I have subscriptions to not a few magazines, but the main ones I like are the more documentarian non-sleaze ones. I am no longer with The Economist but I wish I was. Lads mags are just not for me. They are GROSS!
I really shouldn't be taking up special offers, as I haven't the money or the time to read them all, so I have growing piles of them which I will get around to reading one day when I am not reading through my equally-growing library of books. It is hard to resist that discount through the post, like licking a stamp it is so simple and effortless to have them delivered to your door, and it makes sure you are getting something to look forward to from the postman. It is because I am bored that I do it, I suppose, but I will just have to learn to budget and say no. I really should just buy them off shop shelves as and when I please. At least then I can decide after having looked at the cover and contents page.
Most of these magazines are like thugs. They entice you towards them, then they relieve you of your money, and what for but sleaze?

Re: Are Sexist Magazines like ESQUIRE Posing an Offence on Newsagent Shelves?

Sorry, but I think this is just PC gone mad. I know as many girls that read those mags, put the posters of the girls inside on their walls, as I know blokes that buy them.
And have you (Janus) read any of the popular front of shelf girls mags? They're equally, if not more so, sexist. Most of them feature loads of man hating articles, articles about how to cheat on your man without getting found out, what kind of man they ought to be looking for and seen with, and the advise has nothing to do with character or personality, it's almost always about how their ideal man should look. How to get free drinks and meals out of men when out on the town. How to rate a man's sexual performance.

The truth of the matter is, these types of rags are toilet paper with print on, aimed at a section of society that this kind of trash appeals to. When I look at a magazine stand, my eyes are drawn by the current affairs mags like New Statesman, Spectator, The Economist, The Week..........or musician consumer mags. The rest are just periphery. I'm not offended by them, I don't even notice them. I pity anyone who is small minded enough to be offended by sch garbage.
