What is the most important pledge we can give in our political lives?

An active interest in politics comes with a purpose! Everyone has a personal reason or reasons to be involved and a personal ideology. With this in mind, I pose to all of you reading this a question:-

What do members of this forum believe is the most important of the pledges made in the following statement? :-

'I pledge to defend the independence of our country and the personal liberties of our people'?

    The second part.
So unproductive has conservatism been in producing a general conception of how a social order is maintained that its modern votaries, in trying to construct a theoretical foundation, invariably find themselves appealing almost exclusively to authors who regarded themselves as liberal. - F.A. Hayek

No I wouldn't say they do, even though they should do. Any politician when asked would say they are upholders of civil liberties but I doubt many really believe it if civil liberties get in the way of their agenda. They would also claim to represent the rights to freedom of speech, but as anyone knows freedom of speech in the UK today means saying only what is allowed by the state. Free speech in Britain today can get you a jail sentence if the free speech enters into the government imposed 'no go areas'. I see no firm commitment in any of the 3 main parties to defend the independence of the UK. All of the 3 main parties are pro EU and pro Globalist. There is no will amongst any of the main politians to openly advocate any form of nationalism. There are nation liberals and there will be people within the LibDems who hold liberal nationalist views. The pledges are two in one sentence. This sentence is being proposed as a sworn oath of a liberal group who support the principles of nation liberalism. The question is to find out which of the two pledges is the most important in the minds of national liberals as liberalism and nationalism are two political ideals rolled into one.

The second part tends to come first amongst liberals. However religion has no place in politics and distorts the political process. The UK is a secular society and most people are happy with that situation. Religion rightly plays little part in politics in the UK and has very little influence. Religion in politics would invite confrontation between different religions as one religion became dominant in parliament and bias within politicans of religious faiths towards their own religion when legislating would create confrontation between the citizens and the law enforcers as citizens of different faith or of no faith would publicly protest.

I would say that they were equally important, my personal favourite though would be "I promise never to lie."

Hi ProgressiveNat, and welcome to the Politics Forum!

To start with you might like to read the extended "Welcome" message in the Rules and Guidelines section of the forum, which also includes a full version of the Forum Rules.

Knowing what’s appropriate to say and post and what isn’t can save everyone a great deal of hassle, and as such you might also find the Guide to Good Posting useful. If you’re unfamiliar with the type of forum software we use here, a brief guide to using it can be found here. Please respect other people’s views here; they mightn’t be the same as yours, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re wrong, just that they're different.

If you need help with anything at all to do with the forum, feel free to contact me, or one of the other moderators, via a personal message; our details can be found here, listed as "Minister" and “Junior Minister”.

Perhaps you’d care to formally introduce yourself, which you can do here, or optionally tell us a little bit more about yourself here.

As to your question, I quite agree with what you say; any politician who stands should place his own country and his own people above those of others and should fight for their rights. That's not to say that there shouldn't be associations, perhaps very close associations with other countries for either trade or cultural reasons, or that due consideration shouldn't be given to the cultures and beliefs of resident non-nationals, however these should always be subservient to those of the country as a whole.

    Sums it up nicely!

Also shows the Coalition have a lot of wrongs to put right before this country can return to being the land of 'free speech'.

A very hard promise to live up to. And few people would be convinced that the people making that pledge would come even close to living up to it. But admirable all the same.

Re: What is the most important pledge we can give in our political lives?

To Midas. Thanks for placing the links to the rules and guidelines. I have had a thorough read of the full version of forum rules. I don't think I have broken any rules and will make sure I don't drift into the realms of unacceptable postings. Really I am more interested in hearing other peoples answers to my question than giving my own opinions. But i like to answer each posting with something. Sometimes it will be to disagree with what has been written and an reason why I disagree. However I am well aware that everyone is entitled to believe what they like and many will not miss a chance to slip in a sentence to promote their beliefs.

I agree totally with your last paragraph. I too believe in maintaining close links and associations with other countries, such as free trade zones. I agree that as we are a country with a diverse population of different races that those different races have different cultures and beliefs. As long as people can accept this and accomodate the differences there is no need for it to be a problem. The pledge will be a pledge to uphold the civil rights of all British citizens but to preserve the country and its independence from globalization and to maintain what we would regard as the traditional British way of life as the norm.
