Police arrest six for burning 'Korans'

LONDON Police have arrested six people on suspicion of inciting racial hatred over a YouTube video apparently showing them setting fire to copies of the Koran, a spokesman said Thursday.

Northumbria Police said that they had detained two men on September 15 and four more on Wednesday, adding that all of them had been bailed pending further inquiries.

"The arrests followed the burning of what are believed to have been two Korans in Gateshead on September 11," a spokesman said, referring to a town in the Newcastle conurbation.

"The incident was recorded and a video placed on the Internet."

The YouTube video shows a group of masked men shouting "September 11, International Burn a Koran Day" and "This is for the boys in Afghanistan" before pouring petrol on what they claim are two copies of Islam's holy book.

They then cheer and chant slogans as the books burst into flames, before kicking them.

The police force and the local authority issued a joint statement saying that the "kind of behaviour displayed in this video is not at all representative of our community as a whole.

"Our community is one of mutual respect and we continue to work together with community leaders, residents and people of all faiths and beliefs to maintain good community relations."

The arrests come less than two weeks after a pastor in the US state of Florida cancelled plans to burn a pile of Korans to mark the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Terry Jones triggered a storm of international outrage with the proposal by tiny Dove World Outreach Center for an "International Burn a Koran Day", but relented under pressure from the White House.

Would they have been arrested for burning bibles I wonder, or is this yet another example of the law being applied in a very one-sided manner in favour of ethnic and religious minorities?

These guys were all arrested 'On suspicion of stirring racial hatred!' So Islam has become a race now? Whats the courts going to say I'd like to know, because, Islam is supposedly a religion. If anyone should be arrested, it should be those that published and sell this crap, its nothing short of a manual of hatred of civilised people throughout the world.

Of course burning the Koran is a provocative, offensive and insensitive act, and should not be ignored. However Muslim fundamentalists mocking and abusing our servicmen and woman on British streets, burning national flags be they the Union Flag or the Stars and Stripes and in certain cases carrying out acts of violence and intimidation against their fellow citizens should not go unpunished either, but they do in the 'interests of social harmony' a desire not to 'provoke further civil unrest'. What is sauce for the goose should be sauce for the gander!!

A rather vulgar profane and stupid act, but it hardly warrants being arrested, much less charged with anything so long as the books were thier own property. I think it's the case that the offense of inciting racial hatred, also applies to religious hatred, I think the two offences are often linked.
I don't think Islam should be singled out for any special treatment in the law, nor should it mocked or critisized any more than any other religion. I believe that all religions should be treated with equal contempt and mockery.

Then surely the same should apply to any philosophy, which of course effectively describes any framework of belief. So in effect you advocate that we should hold any faith or philosophy with which we disagree or disbelieve up to mockery, ridicule and contempt. That will go along way towards the pacification of our planet.

A tolerant man might suggest that he would prefer to respect the beliefs of others whilst not sharing them. A thinking man might recognise his good fortune in being allowed to have and follow his beliefs be they religious or non-religious, and as such recognise the rights of others to also be allowed to have their beliefs.

Extremism of one philosophy inevitably compromises the rights and freedoms of another, whether is is the strident secularism prevalent in our society today, some Christian fundamentalists who threaten to deface and destroy the focus of another religion, or Muslim supremacists who choose to indoctrinate others into blowing themselves and dozens of innocent human beings up, in the false name of their Prophet.

Monotheistic supersticion hardly fits the catagory of phylosophy, you do a great dis service to the great phylosophers and thinkers of our species.
There is nothing phylosophical about talking snakes, burning bushes, talking clouds, virgins having babies, people walking from graves.........it's supersticious nonesense.

I cant comment on the phyliopastryosophy of the old testament yet the claims made in the new testament since it was doctored under the orders of the pagan Emporer of Rome, Constantine are untrue, anyone who has read the Gnostic Bibles will see how the council of Micea completely re wrote the story of Jesus some 300 years after his death. The Gnostics didnt believe that Jesus was divine in any way other than any other human. The Modern Version of the new testament is a fraud, though completely harmless, the original was a book of good advice for those wishing to enjoy their lives.

Another case of double standards but we have come to expect that here, yes it was stupid but if you are going to arrest them then you should equally apply the law to all those who threaten to kill us in our own country, which is slightly more inflammatory to me.

You may wish to think that, and irrespective of whether I agree with your beliefs or not, I agree with and defend your right to hold those beliefs.

Interestingly, science has now come up with a very plausible explanation for the parting of the seas enabling Moses and his people to escape. Burning bushes and rising from the dead next perhaps?

    Hi,

so steadily science can be expected to debunk some of the more idiotic superstitions we must hope as logic seems far too complex to be believed - but do remember that it was The druidic head wizard of the church at Canterbury who advocated sharia law as a separate codex in these United Kingdoms.

I do wish science would hurry up!
