    Margaret Thatcher

I have noticed while surfing the web, that some Brits have been comparing Margaret Thatcher to C. O'Donnell. I don't think this is a fair comparison, I don't remember the blogs I was on when I saw the comparison, sorry about that.

    Does the comparison make sense?

I did do a little research on Thatcher and her polices.

I found the story about the miners strike to be quite disturbing.

As an American I am wondering did you like her as Prime Minister for nearly eleven years?

Do you feel her polices helped or hurt your country?

Perhaps you’d care to formally introduce yourself, which you can do here, or optionally tell us a little bit more about yourself here.

As far as your question about Margaret Thatcher is concerned, you'll get some very strongly divided opinions; people in general seem to either love or hate her and her policies. I for one feel that she made a great contribution to Britain and certainly rescued our economy from the mess the previous Labour government had made of it, as well as putting many unions like the miners in their place when they were trying to do untold further damage. Yes, she could be too dogmatic at times especially towards the end of her term, and there are some of her policies which, with hindsight, could have been implemented slightly differently - but hindsight's always wonderful - however on the whole I think she was one of our greatest Prime Ministers.

Its a matter of opinion, when she came to power their were a lot of issues to be addressed in the UK. Unions out of control and mass strikes. Although she delt with a lot of the economic and social issues at the same time she destroyed whole communities. In my opinion her methodolgy towars acheiving her goals was barbaric and is not somebody I admire.

    Re: Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher, the most wretched woman in recent British history. She and her successors (Major, Blair, Brown) set about dismantling this country, destroyed it's ability to create wealth and life long jobs, turned us into a paper economy, left us bancrupt after 30 years of center ground politics designed to appease the middle class. One of her first and most damaging agendas was to destroy the traditional industrial working classes in this country, which she did with savage ruthlessness. She ravaged whole districts and communities. The underbelly of none working, benefit dependant, broken family disfunctional society in this country is a direct result of that disasterous policy. Those people left school at 16, usually foregoing further education for the most part, and went to work in the mines, the foundries, the docs, the car factories, the brick and concrete plants etc. People often patronize people like me by saying such fatuous things as "it's people like you that held them back, by labeling them as "working class"......... well the same people label them now as "underclass" which basically means "none working class" or "economically inactive".
The truth of the matter is, no matter the platitudes of middle class politically correct ding bats, most of those people were never going to make salesmen, call center workers, or best employee of the month at Asda. They came from a proud industrial tradition, served their country as bravely as any soldier, often working in extremely harsh and dangerous conditions to support their families and build this nation.
They had their livelyhoods stole from them, were sold out and lied to by Thatcher and her gang.
It's a pity there isn't a hell for her to rot in.

As I said to Durzo, "...you'll get some very strongly divided opinions; people in general seem to either love or hate her and her policies..."

Needless to say I totally disagree with you, but that's what political and social views are all about. However I'm not about to start another "I love/hate Maggie" thread, we've already had several of those.

    Hi,

the similarity with Ms. O'Donnell or for that matter Mrs. Palin is febrile to say the least - Margaret Thatcher predated Celebrity as a cult thus she was less gender defined. Frankly as soon as a politician becomes dependent on looks and chat shows gice them a job reading out news bulletins and forget about them - clearly they lack the qualities required for leadership.

Personally I did not like Thatcher but clearly with her qualifications she had a brain whereas Palin & O'Donnell seem more electable based on their butt and their power dressing consultant. I can imagine the snorts of derission from Thatcher if someone TOLD her what to wear!

Thatcher took over a very sad country having served her apprenticeship working her way up the ranks politically. The country had been effectively bankrupt by a typically inept Labour Government that had been, with Jim Callaghan who was staggeringly useless as a PM and Denis Healey as Chancellor who was almost as economically illiterate as Gordon Brown & Alastaire Darling put together - you may remember he managed to get in such a muddle The IMF delivered a pre written budget for him 4 times a year!

Productivity at the mines and also in the steel industry was at an all time low, wages were high, bonuses huge and over manning massive.

My grandfather was a miner in the South Wales Valleys until 1921 and like mining in USA it was hard, poorly paid work and under manned - Labour had let the mine wages rise the bonuses rise hours down and over manning to create a salary vote and also absorb the unemployed!

British Steel at Llanwern was locally steal British! I knew people who had businesses locally and worked all day and used to do a night shift at Llanwern and sleep all night for lack of work! The local deli. needed new scales so they were purchased by a friend at Llanwern Social Club and brought home in the box new in his Jag!

Thatcher said sort yourselves and they failed so she brought in McGregor and sort she did - the coal union had a mouth Communist trained leader Scargill who was near brain dead in terms of negotiating and rather than negotiate equity he set a line of no compromise and was too stupid to realise coal stockpiles were massive and we needed no mined coal for 3 or 4 years! Also drag line coal from Wyoming could be delivered to furnace door cheaper than pit head 30 miles away in the valleys!

Thatcher got Britain working again and in doing so she identified the unemployed who had been hidden in Old Labour industries. Once identified they could be retrained, reskilled and put into paying work.

Thatcher had two great faults - she became hectorring nanny in her patronising manner and she was blind to the evils of the EU and it was not until AFTER she and Norman Tebbit were out of office that they realised they had been lied to and duped over The EU by cabinet ministers like Hesseltine, Hurd, Howe, Pym and others.

When Britain leaves The EU as it will, the only consideration is when and will it be in time to avoid the inevitable wars of disassociation as the nation states seek to claim assets that were theirs.

As to 11 years did we like Thatcher? Labour had no one of any caliber during the Thatcher era just as during the 13 unlucky years of Blair's treachery and Brown's economic illiteracy the Tories have had no one to rival them - it became increasingly obvious to the voters that Brown was catastrophic and this let the near useless Cameron in as rarely do people get voted into office it is usually the incumbents being voted out!

You have in America a similar lack of good people for the job who would even put themselves forward and it is hard to think of a single POTUS of any stature, rigor and competence in the last 60 years - so often nations are lions led by donkeys - perhaps in view of the logos used in the US that should be asses - all too relevant with Palin & O'donnell in the running!

    Typical opinion for a Socialist.

If she would have given in to the Soviets and took more money from the productive people and gave it to the non productive you would have loved her.

If you want to define "wretched" you would be much more accurate to assign that name to the filthy Socialists that handed her the mess she inherited.

I have to give you your due. You get about everything you post wrong but at least you are consistent with your hate of everything decent. She was your best Prime Minister. I think the whole world knows that.

Reagan, Kohl and Thatcher are the ones that brought the Soviets to their knees with the deployment of the Pershing II missiles, which bankrupted the Soviet’s military. They could not defend against and any military moves on their part would have brought instant destruction. All you stupid Socialists opposed the united strength of the West and if you would have your way the Soviets would have won the Cold War.
Libtards hate freedom unless it is the freedom to kill a child on demand for the sake of convenience. Otherwise they want the government to control every aspect of our lives.

You started off with a very good analysis of what was achieved with the lady in control, and then blew it by destroying her style!
She managed to undo lots that Labour had created which were damaging our economy, and that can never be easy. I prefer to remember that she started off well, and since power always corrupts she did eventually lose control with her excesses such as the poll tax!

Tell that to the 3 milion she put on the dole, the tens of thousands she made homeless, the thousands of small businesses she destroyed, the broken communities she left behind. Tell it to the miners of Yorkshie, Scotland, Derbyshire, Notts and South Wales. Tell it to the steel and doc workers of tyneside and mersyside, the clyde etc. Tell it to the millions robbed of their hard earned icome by the poll tax, one of the most disgraceful "poor tax" meassures ever in this country.
As for Reagan, he shafted your country good and proper. Read William Klienknecht' "The Man Who Sold The World, Reagans betrayal of main street America". Reagan sold your country out to the coperations and allowed them to plunder your economy, something you're still suffering the effects of, just like we are from Thatcherism.
Our best Piminister?? Is that a joke? Take a poll in Britain, you'll find he vast majority would like to see her strung up next to Tony Blair.
