Council tells schools to rearrange exams and cancel swimming for Ramadan

A council has told schools to rearrange exams, cancel swimming lessons and stop sex education during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Council bosses issued a document to all primary and secondary schools on how to avoid offending Muslim pupils who may still be fasting when the new term starts in September.

The tips from Stoke-on-Trent City council include distributing free school meals as packed lunches to take home and cancelling social events when Muslim parents might not be able to attend.

During Ramadan, it is compulsory for all males and females who have reached puberty to fast from dawn until sunset every day.

Some younger children also choose to fast for all or part of the month.

The council says some pupils will get up before dawn to have their breakfast and, as a result, sleeping patterns could be interrupted.

Schools are also advised to heighten staff awareness about factors affecting pupils during Ramadan.

They are told not to schedule exams or hold parents' meetings and social events after school.

Schools are also directed to avoid swimming lessons because some parents and pupils consider the risk of swallowing water too great.

They should also cancel sex and relationship education because Muslims are expected to avoid sexual thoughts, discourse and relations while fasting.

Teachers are also told that fasting children should not be over-exerted during PE lessons as they may become dehydrated.

And schools should also provide more space for prayer in school, according to the papers.

Words fail me!! Talk about political correctness and bending over backward to give minority ethnic and religious groups priorities over the indigenous British residents! I sincerely hope there's a massive backlash against the council for this idiocy.

Re: Council tells schools to rearrange exams and cancel swimming for Ramadan

I have Pakistan neighbors and I've seen it all. I knew there was one girl in my Sophmore year of high school
who did this and was always missing out whenever we actually got lucky enought to have a pizza party or
    something special to actually eat.

I know some of them are around my age and they are kinda cute, but I just don't know how much they've
changed since the last time I actually spoke with them when the one was still in the same school as me.

From what I've seen and observed for the past several years is that the parents make sure to uphold their
children to their own system and actually instill them at a young age of what they need to perform such
    as their prayer.

Besides all of that, when Ramadan comes around they decorate their small trees with Christmas lights which
often angers them because we joke on how it's not even Christmas yet. When it is Christmas, they are dead
sure to remove those adorable colorful lights.

If they did that in the U.S. I'd be outraged but not surprised since the Left would like always come to their
'sensitivity' if not their defense. If they were to so bad feel that our system of education would ruin their
faith then they can do homeschool and as the Constitution alllows, perform their own thing since we are a
    free country.

I think the child's education is much more important since it enables open doors for them in their future.
Plus they should be encouraged to do what they decide to do unless they wish to really particpate into this.

What about the meat thing though? I heard they could eat some kind of meat?

The funny thing is they can become on dope all they want yet they are not allowed whatsoever to drink..,
    thats quite ironic.

This is absurd. If this is going to public schools, then it shouldn't be because religion of any kind has no place in school, and schools shouldn't have to care about or deal with religion. Private schools can do whatever they want. And that's beside the fact that Britain is a Christian country, those of other faiths work around the system, the system has been around for millennia, and shouldn't change for them. Next they'll be cancelling Christmas carols at schools or Easter egg hunts.

I sincerely hope the residents of Stoke on Trent rise up and ridicule their council and councillors; this instruction needs reversing immediately. It will not be enough to just withdraw the advice, they need to see the error of their ways.

What"s wrong with "bangers and mash", fish and chips, steak and kidney pie, cottage pie and good old Brirish grub on the school menu? What"s wrong with a good old fashioned school assembly (Christian)? Unless our middle East ex-pats can answer nothing, they should have a long think about their choice of adopted country.

A friend of mine who works in a school canteen, in Portsmouth says pork is not allowed to be served because it offends some of our Muslim friends. 85% of these pupils parents don"t even earn their own living - Muslim or otherwise (over 80% are Muslim). We must be mad!

Suppose an English family moved to China, or SE Asia: Monkey, snake, dog, cat and rat are all favourites with the locals. And suppose that same family demanded these mouth watering dishes be taken off the menu - and replaced with some of my favourites above - no chance! If you don"t like go back to "blighty", would be their likely reply. We British are a tolerant people - BUT ALSO VERY STUPID! If you give these people an inch they will take a mile - which is what"s
happening! After all, should we break bread and suck up to a faith that allows a young girl to be stoned to death, for nothing, in the eyes of a civilised society; an extreme punishment even in the middle ages - AND ISLAMIC ZEALOTS IN IRAN STILL DO IT IN 2010! We are clearly dealing with savages!

All this goes to show, west and east are not compatible leave Ramadan and these far eastern dishes where they belong - IN THE EAST!

Don't quite agree to the extent your suggesting there octopus, Islamic zealots in Iran are not strictly relevant to Muslims in Stoke-on-Trent. But this is completely ridiculous. If Muslim parents want to raise their kids in the Islamic faith then fine, that's their choice, but they shouldn't expect everyone else to bend over backwards to accommodate them. We all have the right to do and think and believe what we want, we do not, however, have the right to force it upon other people, or to force them to accommodate it. I'm all for people of different faiths and ethnicities living in and being part of our society but they have to accept that by living here they accept our laws and our customs and if this is incompatible with their choice of belief then they have the choice to move somewhere which is. No-one is forcing them to live here so if they're going to, then they have to accept the way things are done. Atheists don't get special treatment, Christians don't get special treatment, Jews don't get special treatment, Sikhs don't get special treatment, Hindus don't get special treatment so why should Muslims expect special treatment?

That rather depends on the zealots in question, Zak. True, they can"t stone unfaithfull wives to death, at least not at the moment. However, I think we are being dangerously naive, if we allow Islamic parents a free hand to raise their children this way. We should remember that it is a faith of the fanatic; and it is not compatible to British life in my opnion.

My comments may seem harsh, but if we give these people an inch, they will take a mile - true not all are guilty of anti-western activities and disent, but some are, and their presence is a high security risk, which is dangerous for us and future generations. 9/11 and 7/7 set them aside from other creeds and faiths, I"m afraid, Zak.
